Lunchtime / Off Campus Reminders
With the weather warming up, more and more students are making the choice to go off-campus during the lunch break. Our students are expected to make sure they are acting responsibly and appropriately if they are choosing to leave school property at lunch. A few reminders for students / families:
- Students are expected to arrive back on time from lunch (1:07 PM) and expected to be in their classrooms at 1:15 PM. Students who are frequently late returning from lunch will not be allowed to leave campus. We have asked that students not rely on Calgary Transit to go to and from locations at lunch as it often results in overcrowding of buses. “Missing the bus” or “the bus was late” is not an acceptable excuse for returning late after lunch.
- Students need to be respectful if they are visiting local stores or restaurants – this includes not going inside if they are not buying or ordering items and following directions from the employees.
- Students need to make sure that they are not trespassing on peoples property while off campus – including not walking through the condominium complex between 53rd and 54th Street.
We would also encourage you to have conversations with students about buying healthy snacks at lunch. Many students are buying and consuming energy drinks, large bottles of pop, and candy during the lunch hour.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing these reminders with your student.
Online / Social Media Reminders for Parents
We all know that social media plays a prominent part in the lives of most teens and it is largely how they communicate with each other on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, we have been made aware of a number of instances lately where some students have been making negative/inappropriate comments towards each other online. These comments are largely being made in large group chats on Snapchat, Instagram, and/or Tik Tok.
Our CBE The Code of Conduct states that students may be held accountable for behavior that impacts the school beyond the hours of school operation when their conduct detrimentally affects the personal safety and well-being of individuals, the learning environment, or the effective operation of the school.
We are including this note in our weekly message to ask for some support from our parent community. We would encourage all parents/guardians to be aware of their student's online behavior and monitor their social media accounts closely. Some things to consider are:
- Do you allow students to have social media accounts? Have they created one without you knowing?
- Do you know what accounts they have and use? (Snapchat, Instagram, Discord, Tik Tok, Whats App, etc...)
- Most importantly - if your child does have access to technology and/or social media - are you aware of what they are doing on those apps?
Please check in with your child to make sure you know which social media apps and platforms they are using and talk with them about how to make sure their online interactions are positive. We appreciate your support. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Ms. Ferrell or Mr. Parent at the school.
