Meet the Staff / Program Evening - Thursday, September 18
We’re excited to welcome families to our annual Meet the Staff / Program evening this Thursday, September 18, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. This is a great chance to meet the teachers and learn more about program and classroom routines. There will be short, grade specific meetings in the gym at:
- Grade 7: 6:10 – 6:20 PM
- Grade 8: 6:30 – 6:50 PM
- Grade 9: 7:00 – 7:10 PM
Before and after the meetings, staff will be in their classrooms for families to “drop in” and say hello.
A quick reminder to families that this evening is not the time for individual conversations about specific student learning needs. Those can be arranged separately with your student’s teachers at another time.
HDC School Council Annual General Meeting – Monday, September 22
Please join us for our September School Council meeting on Monday, September 22 at 6:30 PM in the HDC Learning Commons. This meeting is open to ALL parents and guardians of HDC students. Being involved in School Council is a great way for parents to be involved in our school community!
This will be our first meeting of the year and serve as our Annual General Meeting. We are looking to fill several key executive positions on our school council this year so are looking forward to a big turnout. Look for additional information about school council in a separate communication that will be sent out to families in the next week.
Student Code of Conduct
We ask that all students and parents/ guardians review the CBE Student Code of Conduct . It outlines the expectations for our students to promote positive and inclusive learning environments, help students to develop empathy and become good citizens both within and outside of the school community,
It is our belief that all students make mistakes as they navigate through adolescence. Our CBE Progressive Student Discipline policy outlines how we work with students to help students learn from their mistakes, allow for the restoration of relationships, and ensure all students understand how to respect themselves, others, and their community.
If you have any questions regarding either document, please feel free to connect with Mr. Parent or Ms. Ferrell at the school.
Reminder - Absences & Lates
Regular attendance is an important factor in success in school. Frequent absences and/or lates result in missed learning opportunities and disrupts classroom routines. If your child will be late or absent, please call the school attendance line at 403-777-7420, Option 1.
Students who arrive at school late are to check in at the office for a welcome slip so we can keep accurate attendance.
We have a number of students who go off campus at lunchtime, with many of them going to Dalhousie Station to get snacks or food. We have a number of students who have returned late after lunch this week. We have reminded them of the importance of them being back on time for afternoon classes. Students who are frequently late returning from lunch will have their families contacted and need to remain on campus at lunch time. We would appreciate families reminding students of the importance of being on time.
Terry Fox Run and Donation Collection
This year, our Terry Fox Run will be held at school on Friday September 19th. Students are asked to bring in donations to support the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research. They can bring in cash donations to their homeroom teacher, or to the main office.
Students can fundraise by bringing in a Dollar to vote for “Save it or Shave it” pertaining to Mr. Leong’s Mustache. The tally of votes will be announced at the Pre-Run Assembly. Our goal is to raise $1000, about $2 per student would get us to our goal!
Donations can also be made online at https://schools.terryfox.ca/HDCartwright
HDC Athletics
All our athletics tryouts, practices and games can be found on our school website, and on the calendars inside the school. Our Senior teams will be for Grade 9’s only, and our Junior Teams will welcome grade 7s and 8s. We will also provide Academy teams for grade 7s who are interested in improving their skills in Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball throughout the respective seasons.
Seasons of Play/Try Outs
Soccer Teams have now been selected for the season. Thank you to all students who came to try outs. Please check the calendar for future games and practices. Basketball tryouts and practices will continue this week. Please check with your coach to know if they are tryouts or practices.
School team lists are posted at the end of the day on the PE Door for Students to check before they head home. Please support your children especially if they did not make the team, and encourage them to take advantage of other opportunities in the school such as Academy teams and Leadership in Athletics Crew (help with score keeping and set up)
Authorization to Try Out Forms
We encourage all students to try out for as many teams as they can, and to complete the “Annual Authorization for Athletic Tryout Form as soon as possible. They must fill one out in order to play on our athletics teams throughout the school year. These can be picked up and returned to the main office.
