HDC School Council Meeting – RESCHEDULED to Monday, October 28
Due to scheduling conflicts, our October School Council Meeting originally planned for tomorrow has been rescheduled to Monday, October 28 at 6:30 PM. This meeting is open to ALL parents and guardians of HDC students. Being involved in School Council is a great way for parents to be involved in our school community!
We are still in need of a Treasurer for our parent groups this year. This position is critical for our school council and parent association. If you are interested in volunteering for this position or have questions about what it would entail, please email Mr. Parent at jlparent@cbe.ab.ca.
Winter is Coming! Cold Weather Reminders
We knew it would come! With tomorrow’s forecast of snow and colder temperatures, we encourage all families to be prepared for the weather. See below for winter weather reminders from the CBE.
Be Prepared for the Changing Weather Conditions
Calgary’s weather can include snow, cold temperatures and wind chill and that make getting to and from school challenging. Families are reminded to prepare and take extra caution during the winter months and periods of extreme weather.
CBE Schools Rarely Close Due to Snow or Cold Temperatures
All CBE schools will remain open to provide a safe, warm and secure environment for students. Even with adverse weather conditions, assume that schools are open unless you hear otherwise from your school. Information regarding any school closures due to weather will be posted on the CBE websites and social media, and shared with local news media.
Be Prepared
Families should ensure they are prepared for all weather conditions.
- Children should be well prepared and dressed for the weather. Students will continue to be expected to go outdoors during the day (PE classes and lunch hour) unless temperatures reach -20 Celsius or colder including the wind-chill factor.
- Children will find it easier to walk through the ice and snow when school items and lunches are carried in a backpack.
- Children should not be left unattended at bus stops for any period of time, under any circumstances. They should have clear instructions on how long to await for the bus and what to do if the bus does not arrive.
- Families should ensure that they have back-up care arrangements if transportation is delayed. Children should have a warm place to stay before and after school (i.e. with a neighbour or a nearby relative).
- We respect parents/guardians right to make their own decisions about sending their children to school. If your child will not be attending classes please ensure you contact the school attendance line to report the absence.
Transportation Delays
With changing weather conditions, roads may also be congested and slippery resulting in possible traffic and bus delays. Unusually cold or stormy weather can result in buses being delayed. Unexpected mechanical problems with the bus may also occur more frequently at this time of year. Children should be dressed appropriately for the colder weather as buses cool off very quickly.
Calgary Transit service delays can be found on their website.
HDC Veterans Food Bank Drive
Veterans have sacrificed so much for all of us and now it is our turn to help them in ensuring that they do not face hunger and can access support for other needs as well. Donations to the Veterans Food Bank go to supporting all military and frontline emergency personnel regardless of whether they are retired or currently serving.
From October 21 – November 7, HDC will be collecting nonperishable food items (dry goods, canned items) or household products (laundry detergent, fabric softener, cleaning products) in support of the Veterans Food Bank. Donations can be dropped off in the office.
School Fees
Families should now be able to see student fees on their MyCBE account. If you have any questions about fees, please contact Ms. King at the school.
HDC Yearbooks
Yearbooks are a great way for students to remember their time at HDC. Our Grade 9 Yearbook class is busy beginning to create these fantastic keepsakes. Cost of a yearbook is $35. If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, families can contact Ms. King to have the fee added to their MyCBE account. Any families who expressed interest in buying a yearbook on Meet the Teacher evening have had the fee added to their MyCBE account.
